more useless facts of the day

June 13th, 2005 by Abbas Halai

back by popular demand.

  • The Sun, the closest of all stars to the earth, is 150 million kilometres away. This distance is known as an “Astronomical Unit” or AU.
  • In the second century BC, the Greek astronomer Hipparchus divided the stars into six brightness categories called ‘magnitudes’. The first magnitude stars were the brightest, while sixth was the faintest he could see. The system, still in use today, is now placed on an exact mathematical scale, wherein five magnitudes correspond to a factor (ratio) of 100 in actual brightness. A first magnitude star is thus 100 times brighter than a sixth magnitude star, so that each magnitude unit is 2.51… times brighter than the next one down.
  • The word ‘poltergeist’ is German for ‘noisy spirit’.
  • Statistics show that major depression afflicts about 15 percent of people in the developed world at one time or another during their lifetimes.
  • It is then only by our early twenties that the brain’s adult hardware is comfortably in place. The next change appears to be more gradual but has been noted by both psychologists and neurologists as shifts in thinking which occur in a person’s forties and fifties.
  • Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. A sufferer experiences increasing impairment of memory, thinking, reasoning and language. Personality change may also occur.
  • The octopus has one of the largest brains of all invertebrates, roughly equal in size to the brain of a fish, and composed of some 170 million nerve cells - Compare this however with the neuronal count of a human - 100 billion.
  • Place 100 coins heads up in a shoebox. Shake vigorously, and open the lid. There is 1 chance in 2 raised to the hundredth power that all the coins will still be heads up.
  • Ancient Egyptian astronomers could predict the flood season of the Nile by noting when the bright star Sirius rose.

back to politics

June 13th, 2005 by Abbas Halai

the downing street memo.

if you don’t know about the scandal, wake up and read a newspaper once in a while, you goob!

The contents of the memo are shocking. The minutes detail how our government did not believe Iraq was a greater threat than other nations; how intelligence was “fixed” to sell the case for war to the American public; and how the Bush Administration’s public assurances of “war as a last resort” were at odds with their privately stated intentions. When asked, British officials “did not dispute the document’s authenticity.” and a senior American official has described it as “absolutely accurate.” Yet the Bush administration continues to simultaneously sidestep the issue while attempting to cast doubt on the memo’s authenticity.

Okay so let’s get something straight. I don’t work for Orkut. I don’t “hack” passwords or reset them. I don’t know anybody who works for Google or Orkut. I have no affiliation with Orkut. If people can’t be responsible enough to secure their computer systems, I really can’t help you out. Thanks.
