brian greene, the author of “the elegant universe” writes an op-ed for the ny times on the 100th anniversary of the discovery of einstein’s famous equation E=mc^2. he gives a brilliant laymans explanation of what the equation means. it’s one of the most famous equations in the world of science and probably anyone being asked what it is, can say that einstein developed the equation, but will 99% of the time not be able to explain what it means. well if you ever wanted to find out, here’s your chance.

to invent something is hard. very, very hard. or maybe it’s too damned easy. who knows. i’m not an inventor so i really can’t say. the encylopaedia britannica has published a list of the greatest inventions of all time. my favourite bit is the button which was invented circa 700 B.C. the funny part about this is that right below the entry for the button is the invention of the button hole which didn’t appear right up until the 13th century. what the hell were people doing making buttons without holes for 2000 years is what i want to know?
sadly pakistan has no entry. but then again, pakistan has only been around for fifty odd years. india on the other hand has an entry for fiber optics from 1955 which is pretty cool. i didn’t realize it was developed there.
canada also has entries for the quartz clock, extraction and preparation of insulin, a motorized personal watercraft, and a snowmobile (figures eh?).

errr….can anyone say cat fight.
also in other news, we have this. i think even the mullah’s are afraid to come in between the pathans and their rituals with goats and little boys. im sure it’ll be a while before the pathans and goats make bbc headlines though. note the sinister editorializing though: “Gay marriage is not legal in conservative Muslim Pakistan”. well buddy, with the exception of three countries (including Canada) there are 189 others where its not legal either. and theyre not all ‘conservative’ or muslim. equality and justice for all, my bretheren.
