the greatest canadian
Abbas Halai
it’s okay if you don’t even know who he is, since most canadians don’t either. but anyway today is tommy douglas day in saskatchewan. he was voted as the greatest canadian of all time by a recent CBC survey surpassing terry fox, pierre trudeau, david suzuki, don cherry (how the hell did he get in the top 10 list?!?!?!), wayne gretzky, alexander graham bell, and john macdonald. apparently mr. douglas was the premier of saskatchewan from 1941 to 1966. and this day was chosen because he was born 101 years ago today. apparently his only contribution was that saskatchewan was the first province to adopt a universal healthcare system. now if you’re wondering where saskatchewan is…good luck.
reminds me of a joke.
an old retired couple are making a road trip in the northern areas of the US and by mistake end up driving in the wrong direction and quibbling and fighting like old married couples do about driving directions and getting lost and all that stuff and end up in a vast emptiness of nowhere land until they realize they’re in canada and finally come up to a small town where they ask the first person they see, “excuse me, but where are we? we seem to be lost.” and the person replies, “saskatoon, saskatchewan.” and the lady looks at her husband and goes “see, they don’t even speak english up here!”
