news watch

November 19th, 2008 by abbas

I would like to introduce you to the recently launched News Watch Pakistan. I would appreciate if anyone feels like it to check it out, review it, link to it and provide feedback for it. Given the lack of quality news sites out there some will find it very useful. It currently features live news from Pakistan (updated every 60 seconds), multiple perspectives, a minimalist interface and some other features. News Watch is currently taking on feature requests and adding new features on a regular basis. Please pass the word to avid readers or whomever you think will benefit.

hubble space telescope image of a planet orbiting a live star

This is the first image (not an inferred effect on the parent star, or simply a detection) of a planet orbiting another living star, taken by the HST. More from the blogger of Bad Astronomy here, including a ground-based image of a two-planet system.

spy vs spy

November 12th, 2008 by abbas

Both OpenOffice and Google Apps are free, so the choice is purely down to which is better. Bruce Byfield, after looking at both, concluded, ‘comparing Google Apps to OpenOffice.org is like clubbing a staked-out bunny — Google Apps is so far behind that the whole exercise seems like an exercise in pointless cruelty.

the way of ninja

November 11th, 2008 by abbas

Combining the ancient arts of ninjutsu with modern ISO-9000 compliance, Ninjalistics Inc. helps enterprise clients solve problems, remove obstacles, and stay competitive.

Ninjalistics, a leading provider in the hotly competitive covert tactical realignment operations industry, works with multinational Fortune 500 corporations worldwide, including six of the Fortune 10. Whether your company needs to dispose of whistleblowers, intimidate journalists, defeat unions, or circumvent unwelcome regulation, you can rely on highly trained Ninjalistics operatives to perform with style and finality.

Though nominally founded in the recent past by Swedish cowherd and ninja Bjorn Lundstrom (with several partners who are now departed), Ninjalistics descends from a venerable Eastern tradition of excellence espoused by 16th-Century assassin Hunzo “The Night Slider” Yamazaki. The Slider’s spirit lives on today in our commitment to the award-winning Holistic Quality Optimization (HoQuOP) program, rigorous adherence to Sarbanes-Oxley financial guidelines, and industry-leading ISO-9000 processes. “It’s all about process!” Our matchless record of good corporate citizenship means clients can rest assured: Your adversaries are dispatched in darkness and silence, with all proper paperwork filed afterward.

hand to mouth

November 2nd, 2008 by abbas

You aren’t going to read about this in the US press, they are too busy lying about everything they report. We have to read about it in a British newspaper. Goldman Sachs just took a $12B bailout package and have set aside $14B in bonuses for the executives.

Goldman Sachs is on course to pay its top City bankers multimillion-pound bonuses - despite asking the U.S. government for an emergency bail-out.

The struggling Wall Street bank has set aside £7billion for salaries and 2008 year-end bonuses, it emerged yesterday.

Each of the firm’s 443 partners is on course to pocket an average Christmas bonus of more than £3million.

The size of the pay pool comfortably dwarfs the £6.1billion lifeline which the U.S. government is throwing to Goldman as part of its £430billion bail-out.

As Washington pours money into the bank, the cash will immediately be channelled to Goldman’s already well-heeled employees.

the perfect desktop

November 2nd, 2008 by abbas

This tutorial shows how you can set up an Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) desktop that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop, i.e. that has all the software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that works even on old hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.

jude the obscure

November 2nd, 2008 by abbas

Occasionally it is a treat to remind ourselves how remarkable some of our most common gadgets are. A typical microwave oven ramps up the electricity from a 120-volt wall outlet to an incredible 3,000 volts or more and safely cooks food in just a minute or two, yet it costs less than a pair of good shoes. And we can watch the show through the handy window.

The key component is the magnetron. Although the name conjures up hardware from a questionable science-fiction movie, the sophisticated vacuum tube generates microwaves powerful enough for military radars (for which it was originally developed). Instead of a flame or electric coil generating heat that warms food from the outside, the microwaves penetrate food and create heat from within.
